Kenyan content creator and influencer Pritty Vishy has announced her exit from DJing, weeks after making her debut behind the decks and facing criticism over her first performance.
The 24-year-old influencer said she has decided to walk away from the career after what she described as an overwhelming experience marked by online backlash, criticism from fellow DJs and a difficult first gig.
Vishy also revealed that she plans to sell her Pioneer DJ controller, effectively bringing her short-lived DJ career to an end.
In a series of social media statements, the content creator explained that the reaction to her entry into DJing surprised her, particularly the criticism she received from male DJs.
“Recently I came out as a DJ, and I never expected that reception. I never expected male DJs to be on my neck,” she said.
She questioned why people expected her to perform at the level of established DJs when she was only beginning to learn the craft.
Vishy said she had expected criticism to some extent but did not anticipate the level of hostility that followed her debut.
She described herself as a 24-year-old beginner facing an established DJ industry and said she felt that many DJs were against her rather than allowing her room to develop her skills.
“Just imagine a 24-year-old against 90 per cent of DJs in Kenya,” she said.
The influencer also criticised the expectations created by social media, arguing that people increasingly expect beginners to appear perfect when they first attempt something publicly.
“Social media imetufanya tuamini kwamba if anyone comes online, you have to be perfect about something, not the beginning side of you,” she said.
Her comments came as she announced that she no longer wanted to continue pursuing DJing.
“I don’t think I’ll want to be a DJ again from the experience I had from my first gig,” Vishy said.
She added a pointed message to those who had criticised her: “Finally, you have won this time.”
Vishy’s decision follows a difficult first official DJ performance that left her emotional.
The content creator previously revealed that she encountered technical problems during the gig, with one side of the DJ equipment reportedly malfunctioning.
The equipment problems meant she had to work with only one side of the deck, adding pressure to an already challenging first performance.
As a beginner, Vishy said the experience affected her confidence and contributed to severe stage fright. After returning home, she broke down in tears over the performance.
She had prepared for the opportunity and wanted to demonstrate what she had learned, making the difficult debut particularly disappointing for her.
The incident subsequently became a subject of online discussion, with some social media users criticising her mixing skills while others defended her and urged people to give her time to improve.
Before announcing her decision to quit, Vishy received encouragement from veteran Kenyan DJ and media personality Pierra Makena. Makena reached out to Vishy after the emotional debut and encouraged her not to abandon DJing because of one difficult performance.
Her intervention came as Vishy dealt with criticism and attempted to process the experience.
She previously took a break from social media after the backlash surrounding her DJ journey intensified.
“Sometimes, walking away is the strongest thing you can do,” she said in one of her statements.
Despite quitting DJing, Vishy has no plans to leave the entertainment and digital space.
