KRA Chairperson Ndiritu Muriithi Announces Bid for Laikipia Governor Seat

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Chairperson and former Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi has formally entered the race to reclaim the Laikipia governorship in the 2027 General Election.

Muriithi announced his bid in Nyahururu on Saturday, signalling his return to elective politics after serving as Laikipia governor for one term.

The party has positioned itself around what Muriithi describes as an alternative political approach for the Mount Kenya region.

Muriithi served as Laikipia governor from 2017 to 2022.

He defeated then-incumbent Joshua Irungu in the 2017 election, securing 100,342 votes against Irungu’s 98,349.

Irungu subsequently reclaimed the governorship in the 2022 General Election, meaning Muriithi is now seeking a political comeback in the county.

His return has been the subject of speculation for months, with reports in May indicating that he had intensified grassroots engagements across Laikipia ahead of the 2027 elections.

Muriithi’s decision to run on the RPK ticket also ends speculation that he could seek the governorship through the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

His political return comes as several aspirants position themselves for the Laikipia governor’s race.

Among those reported to be considering or pursuing the seat are Laikipia East Mwangi Kiunjuri, County Secretary Koinange Wahome, Health CECM Albert Taiti, former Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru and businessman Kihunyu Gitogo.

Muriithi’s experience as a former governor and his current position as KRA chairperson are expected to feature prominently in the contest as he seeks to rebuild his political support across the county.
