NAIROBI, Kenya – Comedian Sammy Kioko is back home from the hospital after receiving care at Nairobi West hospital following his recent ordeal during a protest over a disputed payment claim involving Machakos County.
Taking to social media, Kioko says the hospital discharge marks a powerful moment of relief and resilience for him and individuals rallying behind him in solidarity.
Upon his discharge, Kioki shared a heartfelt statement in a video recounting his journey toward justice, capturing the depth of his experience and his gratitude:
“I carried a voice that refused to stay silent, stepping into offices with hope and questions for the dreams of many. Through interviews, pain, and attacks, I faced the unthinkable, yet never felt alone. The community, artists, leaders, youths, and ordinary citizens stood firm, filling the streets with prayers, demonstrations, and unwavering support,” he wrote.
“I walked out of the darkness not as a victim, but as a survivor, still standing, still speaking, and still believing in justice and unity. To everyone who stood by me, who prayed, who marched, who spoke up, THANK YOU. Your love, support, and fight against impunity is what kept me going.”
This comes barely days after Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Thursday, April 2, visited him, expressing solidarity with him and his family.
In a statement, Kalonzo disclosed that they had spoken with Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti, who is said to be “keen to ensure that the matter is handled fairly and transparently.”
Kalonzo called for calm and restraint, urging all parties to allow the facts to guide the process.
“I hope that this issue will now proceed with calm, sobriety, and a clear focus on the facts,” the statement noted, adding that Kioko must heal in peace without external pressure.
The entertainer, who also runs Movata Fashion, had staged demonstrations claiming that his company supplied uniforms to the Machakos County Government during the 2023/2024 financial year under a contract worth Sh20 million.
However, Kioko stated that despite fulfilling the supply, he only received Sh20,000, a claim he supported by sharing Mpesa transaction messages.
This comes barely days after Governor Wavinya Ndeti agreed to host Kioko’s sister, Maureen Mwende Mutua, at her residence in an effort to resolve the pending bill.
Wavinya revealed that she held a productive conversation with Maureen alongside her parents to resolve the long-standing debt owed to Movata Designs amicably.
“We had an open and productive conversation, and I want to assure the public that Movata Designs will be paid as per the procedures in accordance with the established processes. This ensures that all payments are handled transparently, fairly, and in line with the law,” the statement read in parts.
“Maureen, my dear, all will be well. Mama is proud of your courage and maturity to resolve this matter amicably. Thank you, Maureen, for bringing this matter to light and for your clarity.”
The governor added: “The matter was politicised, and I am pleased that the issue has now been amicably resolved and the payment will be made in accordance with the established procedures.”
Speaking after the meeting, Maureen Mwende thanked Governor Wavinya for her intervention.
“Regarding the issue about our pending bill, we are privileged to have visited the governor of Machakos, our Mama, Wavinya Ndeti. We came with our parents and had a deep discussion of the issue. After listening, she has committed to ensuring that everything is paid and that protocol is followed,” she said.
“My brother and I acknowledge that some of our previous actions online did not follow proper procedure. We express our apologies; that was only our way of showing frustration, but now we know better.”
