Kenyan fashion brand Yoshita 1967 has made history on the global fashion stage after its founder, Anil Padia, won the Savoir-Faire Prize at the 2026 LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers.

Padia received the prestigious honour during the LVMH Prize ceremony at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris on September 4, 2026, marking a major milestone for Kenyan fashion.

Yoshita 1967 became the first Kenyan label to reach the LVMH Prize final, placing Kenya among the countries represented in one of the fashion industry’s most closely watched emerging-designer competitions.

The brand was among nine finalists selected from more than 2,400 applications for this year’s competition.

The Savoir-Faire Prize recognises designers whose work demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship, technical expertise and innovation.

For Padia, the award also reflects the philosophy behind Yoshita 1967, a Nairobi-based luxury house that places artisanship, cultural heritage and collaboration at the centre of its work.

Following the announcement, Padia expressed his gratitude to the people behind the brand.

“I am completely lost for words. This has been a collective effort from all our team in Nairobi, and I am just extremely honoured.”

The prize comes with a €200,000 grant and a year of mentorship from LVMH experts, giving Yoshita 1967 financial and professional support as it develops its international presence.

Yoshita 1967 is an artisan-led luxury fashion house founded by Anil Padia and rooted in his Kenyan-Indian heritage.

The brand describes its creative approach as being shaped by craft, cultural transmission and collective growth. Its work draws on Padia’s experiences between Nairobi and Paris, while bringing together different cultural histories and perspectives.

The brand works with women-led craft communities and uses traditional handcraft techniques in contemporary fashion. Its approach includes crochet, embroidery and detailed hand embellishment, allowing handmade techniques to become part of modern luxury garments.

LVMH praised the label’s emphasis on slow production and long-term collaboration, highlighting its focus on training, dignity and stability for the communities involved in its work.

The fashion house also uses craft to explore themes including identity, memory and taboo, creating space for stories and voices that have often been overlooked.

Padia’s creative identity draws heavily from his Kenyan-Indian lineage, which informs the visual language and storytelling behind Yoshita 1967.

When the brand launched in 2024, Padia described its purpose in deeply personal terms.

“The brand unifies the unheard voices of the women in my life and the censured stories in my lineage.”

He added that Yoshita 1967 represented a process of returning to himself while celebrating the relationship between different cultures.

That connection between heritage and contemporary design has become one of the defining characteristics of the label.

Yoshita 1967’s achievement carries significance beyond the individual award.

Before the 2026 edition, no Kenyan designer had reached the LVMH Prize final. LVMH specifically highlighted Kenya’s presence when it announced the finalists, describing Padia’s selection as the first time the country had been represented in the final.

Padia competed alongside designers from the United States, France, Georgia, Belgium, China, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Spain.

The nine finalists presented their collections to an influential jury that included fashion figures such as Jonathan Anderson, Sarah Burton, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Nicolas Ghesquière, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo and Pharrell Williams.

Although Belgian designer Julie Kegels won the main 2026 LVMH Prize, and Chinese designer Zane Li of Lii received the Karl Lagerfeld Prize, Yoshita 1967 emerged with the Savoir-Faire honour.
