Internet boxing sensation Mbavu Destroyer has escalated his dispute with rival Majembe and event promoter Oga Obinna by filing a lawsuit following his controversial defeat in the widely publicized “Vurugu Fight.”
The case, now before the Sports Disputes Tribunal, marks a dramatic shift from online rivalry to a formal legal battle, with Mbavu seeking to overturn the outcome of the bout held at Nairobi’s Kasarani Indoor Arena.
The highly anticipated fight ended in the fourth round after Majembe secured a technical knockout victory. However, the result was immediately contested, with Mbavu claiming the decisive blow was illegal.
Mbavu insists he was struck in a prohibited area,(specifically the lower abdomen) raising questions about the legitimacy of the knockout.
The controversial ending has fueled intense debate among fans and observers, with some backing Mbavu’s claims while others maintain the result was valid.
In court filings, Mbavu Destroyer is seeking multiple remedies, including: annulment of the fight result, declaration as the rightful winner, alternatively, an order for a rematch under revised conditions, compensation including prize money and winnings
The original prize package included over Sh 2.5 million in cash, a Toyota Voxy, a Taro GP1 motorbike, and the championship belt awarded to the winner.
Mbavu is now pushing for those rewards to be reassigned to him or compensated through damages.
The lawsuit does not only target Majembe. Mbavu has also named event organiser Oga Obinna as a respondent, citing concerns over how the fight was conducted and officiated.
Additionally, the Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) has been listed as an interested party, pointing to broader questions about regulation and oversight in the rapidly growing influencer boxing scene.
Mbavu’s camp has gone further to allege possible irregularities in the fight’s outcome, including claims that officiating decisions may have been flawed.
The “Vurugu Fight Night” had been marketed as a major entertainment spectacle, blending sport and social media influence to attract a massive audience.
The case has been certified as urgent and is scheduled to be mentioned on April 15, where initial directions are expected to be issued.
