NAIROBI, Kenya — Nairobi County Chief Officer for Customer Engagement and Citizen Service Geoffrey Mosiria has urged the government to consider establishing a fund to help young people start families and meet the financial challenges associated with marriage.
In a statement shared on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Mosiria proposed the creation of what he called a “Life Starter Pack”, saying government support could help young people establish independent households and settle down.
“Marriage is a beautiful thing. The government needs to set aside a fund as a ‘Life Starter Pack’ to help young people establish their families and get married,” Mosiria said.
He argued that marriage between committed partners can have benefits extending beyond the couple to their families and the wider community.
“We should also remember that a marriage between two serious and committed couples comes with blessings, not only for the couple but also for their families and the wider community,” he said.
Mosiria links marriage to youth responsibility
Mosiria further called for young people to be supported and encouraged to get married, arguing that starting a family can help foster a greater sense of responsibility.
He said young people who establish families could become more motivated to work, innovate and build stable lives while contributing positively to society.
“Many young people should be supported and encouraged to get married. Marriage can instill a sense of responsibility in young people, giving them greater motivation to be innovative, work hard, build their lives, and contribute positively to society,” Mosiria said.
He, however, linked such support to broader economic empowerment, saying young people also require opportunities that can help them become financially independent.
Call for opportunities alongside family support
Mosiria maintained that encouraging young people to establish families should be accompanied by practical measures to help them build sustainable livelihoods.
He said young people face financial challenges that can make it difficult to establish independent households, and argued that government support should therefore extend beyond marriage itself to economic opportunities.
“Let us support our young people to build families, create opportunities, and have a reason to work hard for a better future,” he added.
His proposal for a “Life Starter Pack” comes amid wider conversations about youth economic empowerment and the financial pressures facing young people seeking to establish independent lives.
