The England national football team has avoided a major World Cup disruption after American police recovered most of the squad’s stolen training equipment and arrested two suspects following a vehicle break-in during transit to the team’s tournament base.
Authorities in Missouri confirmed that two individuals are currently in custody after police launched an immediate investigation into the theft, which targeted equipment belonging to England’s squad just days before the team begins its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The incident briefly sparked concerns inside the England camp after critical training gear, player equipment, and medical supplies disappeared while being transported across the United States.
However, officials say the quick police response prevented what could have become a serious logistical setback for manager Thomas Tuchel and his players.
According to reports, the stolen equipment had been loaded onto a transport vehicle moving essential team gear from England’s pre-tournament training base in West Palm Beach, Florida, to the squad’s official World Cup headquarters at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri.
The theft happened while the equipment remained in transit. Team staff only discovered the missing items after the vehicle arrived in Kansas City on Friday night and personnel began unloading supplies at the new training base.
Officials immediately noticed that a large amount of essential football equipment had vanished.
The discovery triggered instant concern inside the camp, with security teams initially exploring whether the theft involved outside criminals or individuals with knowledge of the transport operation.
The thieves managed to steal several important items directly connected to England’s daily World Cup preparations.
Among the missing equipment were match boots belonging to some of England’s biggest stars, including captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Officials also confirmed the theft involved official tournament footballs, multiple training kits, training cones used during practice drills, and several pieces of coaching equipment essential for technical preparation.
The stolen materials also included tactical whiteboards used by the coaching staff to prepare match plans and conduct team analysis sessions.
Medical staff suffered losses as well after thieves took massage tables regularly used for player recovery treatment and injury management.
Following the discovery, the Kansas City Missouri Police Department quickly opened an active criminal investigation.
Authorities moved rapidly to track potential suspects connected to the break-in and soon identified two individuals believed to have participated in the theft.
Police arrested both suspects on Friday night shortly after receiving details surrounding the stolen property with investigations ongoing.
As a major relief for England’s coaching staff, police successfully recovered most of the stolen property shortly after making the arrests.
Despite the security scare, England’s World Cup preparations remain largely unaffected. The squad still plans to hold its first full training session on Sunday as originally scheduled.
England then turns full attention toward its opening Group L fixture against Croatia scheduled for Wednesday in Dallas.
