NAIROBI, Kenya- Fresh from clinching the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title, Gor Mahia players, technical staff and club officials paid an emotional visit to Mama Ida Odinga’s Karen residence on Monday, where they presented their league trophy and the ODM Cup in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The ceremony came barely a day after K’Ogalo sealed their record-extending 22nd league title, with club leaders describing the visit as the fulfilment of a promise made to Raila before his death.

Led by club chairman Ambrose Rachier, the delegation handed over the silverware to Mama Ida, who warmly welcomed the team and congratulated them for delivering what the family described as Raila’s final football wish.

According to Rachier, the late ODM leader had challenged the club to reclaim its dominance after expressing concern over declining standards and financial struggles.

“Baba asked us why our standards were dropping. We told him the truth: we were facing financial challenges,” Rachier said.

He revealed that Raila stepped in with financial support and issued a clear directive to the club.

“He gave us support and then ordered us to win the ODM Cup and the league title. Today, we are here to present the two trophies ordered by Baba Raila Odinga,” Rachier said.

The event carried deep emotional significance, given Raila’s long-standing association with Gor Mahia as one of the club’s most influential patrons and supporters over the years.

Receiving the trophies, Mama Ida thanked the players for honouring Raila’s legacy and assured them that the Odinga family would continue supporting the club.

“I am very happy to host you here at our home. This should not be the last time you come. Feel free to visit anytime,” she said.

“We have been part of this team for many years, and we remain part of it. To our champions, congratulations. Your hard work, dedication and commitment are deeply appreciated.”

Also present was Raila Odinga Jr., who said the gathering was inspired by the overwhelming reception he received from Gor Mahia supporters during the club’s title celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium.

“It is a great honour to receive all of you here in honour of my late father,” he said, adding that Raila strongly believed in the power of sports to unite people across the country.

The ceremony also featured emotional moments as family members, club officials and long-time associates reflected on Raila’s enduring connection with the club.

For Gor Mahia, the visit represented more than a trophy presentation. It was a symbolic closing of a chapter, a tribute to a patron who stood by the club through difficult periods and whose final challenge has now been fulfilled.

As chants of “K’Ogalo” echoed through the Karen residence, the league trophy and ODM Cup became more than symbols of football success. They became a testament to a promise kept and a legacy honoured.
