Manchester City F.C. manager Pep Guardiola has officially stepped down, bringing to an end one of the most successful managerial eras in English football history.
The emotional farewell unfolded on Sunday during City’s final Premier League match of the season against Aston Villa F.C. at the Etihad Stadium, where fans, players and club officials paid tribute to the legendary Spaniard after 10 trophy-laden years at the club.
Although Manchester City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa, the result was largely overshadowed by emotional scenes as Guardiola bid farewell to supporters who celebrated his extraordinary impact on the club.
Guardiola, visibly emotional throughout the ceremony, received a guard of honour from players and staff before addressing fans at the Etihad Stadium.
“What a time we have had together,” Guardiola said in his farewell message as supporters chanted his name inside the packed stadium.
Manchester City also announced major tributes in honour of the departing manager, including naming the club’s newly expanded North Stand as the “Pep Guardiola Stand” and commissioning a statue outside the stadium.
Guardiola leaves Manchester City as the most successful manager in the club’s history, having won 20 major trophies since arriving from Bayern Munich in 2016.
His achievements include six Premier League titles, multiple domestic cups and the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy, cementing City’s status as a global football powerhouse.
Beyond silverware, Guardiola is widely credited with revolutionising English football through his possession-based philosophy, tactical innovation and dominance over the Premier League during the past decade.
The 55-year-old confirmed he intends to take a break from football management, saying he needs time away from the intense demands of coaching after nearly two decades at the top level.
“I will be out for a while,” Guardiola said while hinting he may eventually consider international football in the future.
Reports indicate former Manchester City assistant and ex-Chelsea F.C. boss Enzo Maresca is among the leading candidates to replace Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
Fans across the football world flooded social media with tributes celebrating Guardiola’s legacy, with many describing him as one of the greatest managers in football history.
