Taylor Swift has become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after taking home three trophies at the 2026 ceremony, pushing her career total to 33 Moon Person awards.
Swift reached the milestone during the September 27 ceremony in Los Angeles after winning Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” Best Direction for “Opalite” and the inaugural Artist Director Honors.
Her three victories moved her past Beyoncé, with whom she had previously shared the record at 30 VMA wins.
The milestone capped a 17-year run at the VMAs that began with Swift’s first win in 2009.
Swift’s biggest competitive win came in the Video of the Year category for “The Fate of Ophelia,” the first single from her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.
The victory extended her record in the category to six wins. Before 2026, Swift had won Video of the Year for “Bad Blood” in 2015, “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019, “All Too Well: The Short Film” in 2022, “Anti-Hero” in 2023 and “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone in 2024. Guinness World Records had also previously listed Swift as the record holder with five Video of the Year wins.
Swift dedicated her latest Video of the Year award to country music legend Dolly Parton, who died in August aged 80.
Holding the Moon Person, Swift called Parton “the ultimate showgirl” and praised her storytelling.
“I think that we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time,” Swift said.
Swift also made history by receiving the first-ever Artist Director Honors, a new MTV award recognising artists who have made significant contributions to music-video direction and visual storytelling.
The award reflected another side of Swift’s career beyond her work as a singer and songwriter.
Swift has written and directed 18 of the roughly 60 music videos she has made during her career. Her directing credits include videos such as “The Man,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero” and “Fortnight.”
Swift also won Best Direction for “Opalite,” adding another competitive directing award to her collection.
Speaking after receiving the Artist Director Honors, Swift credited her fans for encouraging her work behind the camera.
“The main reason I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much, so much fun,” she said. “You actually care about what we’re making.”
Her latest directing award further strengthened her association with the visual production of her music, particularly as she has increasingly taken creative control of her videos.
Swift’s VMA journey began on September 13, 2009, when she won Best Female Video for “You Belong with Me.”
The 2009 ceremony became one of the most widely remembered moments in VMA history after Kanye West interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech.
Swift’s VMA haul grew considerably during the 2020s. Her nine wins in 2023 took her career tally to 30, putting her level with Beyoncé. She then won seven awards from 12 nominations in 2024, including Video of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Editing, Song of Summer and Artist of the Year.
Swift did not add to her VMA total in 2025, leaving her tied with Beyoncé heading into this year’s ceremony.
Her three wins in 2026 finally separated the pair and gave Swift sole possession of the overall record.
Swift’s record came during a ceremony in which Madonna led all winners with seven awards, including Artist of the Year. Swift’s three awards nevertheless produced the night’s major record, taking her career total to 33.
The singer also used the ceremony to debut the music video for “Patient Zero,” a self-directed project starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
