BUSIA, Kenya — Four suspects have been arrested and cannabis worth an estimated Sh1.9 million seized in separate anti-narcotics operations in Busia and Bungoma counties.
In Busia, detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigation Bureau (NANIB), acting on intelligence, intercepted a Fuso lorry, registration number KDU 981Y, along the Busia–Kisumu Highway.
The lorry was reportedly transporting cereals to Nairobi when detectives searched it and discovered 14 bales of cannabis concealed beneath dry cassava.
The cannabis, packed in two sacks, weighed 59.15 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of Sh1,774,500, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Two suspects, Evans Josiah Mugambi and Moses Murambula Odwera, were arrested during the operation.
Two Arrested In Bungoma
In neighbouring Bungoma County, officers from Bungoma Police Station intercepted a grey Toyota Probox, registration number KCK 089M, during patrols along the Siritanyi–Mateka Road.
Police said a search of the vehicle led to the recovery of five bales of cannabis weighing seven kilogrammes.
The consignment was allegedly wrapped in yellow tape and concealed inside a sack.
Two suspects, Boaz Kwamba and Peter Ndungu, were arrested in connection with the recovered narcotics.
The four suspects remain in custody pending processing and arraignment, while the two vehicles and recovered cannabis have been secured as exhibits.
The DCI said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to disrupt narcotics trafficking networks and bring suspected traffickers to justice.
The allegations against the suspects have not been tested in court, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
