NAIROBI, Kenya — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed as false and misleading a report by KTN News and The Standard linking its officers to the alleged interception of a vehicle at the Uganda border carrying election-related materials.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, 2026, the DCI said the reports falsely claimed that three occupants of the vehicle were questioned and that election materials were confiscated.
The Directorate also rejected claims that one of its officers was involved in investigations into alleged electoral malpractice concerning IEBC voter registration materials.
According to the DCI, the report further alleged that the officer had been warned to abandon the investigation or risk being transferred before eventually being moved to DCI headquarters.
The agency said none of these claims was true.
“These allegations are false, inaccurate and wholly without foundation,” the DCI said, adding that there was no such officer, arrest or transfer linked to an electoral investigation as described in the report.
The Directorate also raised concern over the timing of the publication, coming as Kenya begins preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The DCI said KTN News did not seek a response from the Directorate before airing or publishing the report, arguing that sensitive stories touching on national security and electoral integrity require thorough verification and a right of reply.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting what it described as a free, fair, transparent and credible electoral process.
It said it would continue carrying out its mandate in accordance with the Constitution and the law, insisting that no DCI officer is above the law and that no officer is directed to abandon a lawful investigation.
The DCI further urged media organisations and journalists to uphold professional and ethical standards when reporting on electoral and security matters.
“Verification of facts before publication is essential to public confidence in institutions and to the integrity of the electoral process,” the Directorate said.
The DCI said it would formally raise its concerns with the relevant statutory bodies responsible for media standards and accountability, while respecting the constitutional guarantee of media freedom.
It advised members of the public to treat the KTN report as unfounded.
