NAIROBI, Kenya- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that police officers played a central role in the alleged conspiracy surrounding the murder of Dr Mutiso, with one officer arrested and another reported to be on the run.
Speaking during a briefing, DCI Director Mohamed Amin said investigations had established the identity of the officer who allegedly pulled the trigger, following forensic analysis of evidence gathered by detectives.
Amin said Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, had been arrested after investigators linked him to the scene of the fatal shooting.
“Thorough analysis of evidence has further established the identity of the officer who pulled the trigger. One PC Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, has equally been arrested. We were able to forensically place him to the scene of the fatal shooting,” Amin said.
The DCI boss identified Kimoi as the officer believed to have fatally shot Dr Mutiso.
Officer Accused of Linking Financiers and Killers on the Run
Amin further disclosed that another police officer, Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, who was in charge of Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, had been identified as a key link in the alleged plot.
According to the DCI, Sang allegedly connected the financiers of the operation with the operational team and was also linked to the source of the firearm used in the killing.
“The evidence led our investigators to Kenya Police Service officers who, apparently and unfortunately, played very critical roles in the conspiracy,” Amin said.
He added that Inspector Sang was currently at large as detectives continued efforts to trace him.
Two More Suspects Identified
The DCI said further investigations involving forensic analysis, CCTV footage review and intelligence-led operations led detectives to two additional suspects — Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia.
Amin said Daniel Mwangi Njoroge had been identified as a central organiser of the operation.
Investigators established that Njoroge was the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration number KDH 600A, which was allegedly used to block the Uber vehicle and in which Dr Mutiso was travelling shortly before he was shot.
“The driver of the Land Cruiser Prado was established as a central organiser of the operation,” Amin said.
The DCI said the probe into Dr Mutiso’s killing remains active, with detectives pursuing other individuals believed to have been involved in planning and executing the crime.
The revelations come as investigators continue piecing together the events leading to the doctor’s death, focusing on the alleged coordination between civilians and members of the security forces.
