NAIROBI, Kenya- A police inspector has been identified as a key suspect in the murder investigation of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) saying the officer is currently on the run.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin said Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, the officer in charge of Nderi Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, has been positively identified as part of the alleged conspiracy surrounding Dr Mutiso’s killing.
According to Amin, investigations established that police officers allegedly played critical roles in the planning and execution of the murder.
“The evidence led our investigators to Kenya Police Service officers who, apparently and unfortunately, played very critical roles in the conspiracy,” Amin said.
The DCI boss said Inspector Sang was identified as the alleged link between the financiers of the operation and the operational team.
He was also named as the source of the firearm allegedly used in the killing.
Amin said the officer had since gone missing and was being pursued by investigators.
Trigger Man Arrested
The DCI has also arrested Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station.
Amin said forensic analysis placed Kimoi at the scene of the shooting and identified him as the officer who allegedly pulled the trigger.
“Thorough analysis of evidence has further established the identity of the officer who pulled the trigger,” Amin said.
Suspects Linked to Prado Vehicle
The investigation has also focused on two civilian suspects — Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia.
The DCI said Njoroge was identified as a central organiser of the operation and was the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration number KDH 600A, which investigators believe was used to block the Uber vehicle carrying Dr Mutiso shortly before the shooting.
Dr Mutiso, a clinical psychologist and mental health researcher, was fatally shot in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area on July 29, 2026, after requesting an Uber ride.
The DCI launched a homicide investigation involving forensic experts and homicide detectives following the killing.
Detectives are continuing with investigations as they pursue Inspector Sang and other suspects believed to have been involved in the planning and execution of the killing.
The DCI has maintained that the probe is ongoing and that more details will emerge as investigators complete their work.
