KIBWEZI, Makueni County — Former High Court Judge Justice Joseph Mutava Mbalu will be laid to rest at his rural home in Kibwezi, Makueni County, on Friday, September 4, 2026, with Members of Parliament, judicial officials and other dignitaries expected to attend his final send-off.
Justice Mutava died on Saturday, August 22, after suddenly falling ill at his rural home in Kithasyu, Makueni County.
According to family members, the former judge had attended a burial ceremony in the neighbourhood and showed no signs of illness before collapsing later that night.
He was rushed to Makindu Sub-County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was subsequently transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political and legal figures, who have remembered him as an accomplished lawyer, jurist and public servant.
Parliament mourns Justice Mutava
Members of the National Assembly and Senate joined the family of Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu for a Requiem Mass in honour of her late husband at St John the Evangelist Catholic Parish in Karen, Nairobi.
Staff of the Parliamentary Service Commission also joined lawmakers in conveying condolences to the bereaved family.
A message from Parliament was read by Gilgil MP Martha Wangari, who represented National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula during the service.
Wangari described Justice Mutava as a devoted family man and respected jurist who served Kenya with distinction.
“The demise of Justice Mutava has left a profound emptiness that cannot be expressed in words. Justice Mutava spent many years serving the people of Kenya with courage and compassion. We are here to stand with Hon. Jessica and her family, just as she has stood with her colleagues in Parliament,” Wangari said.
The tributes highlighted Mutava’s contribution to the legal profession and public service, as well as his role as a husband and father.
