KITUI, Kenya- Police in Kitui County have arrested two men after intercepting cannabis in separate operations at a police station and along the Thika–Garissa Highway.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the first suspect was arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle 69 rolls of cannabis and 33 matchstick-sized packages into Kitui Police Station.
According to the DCI, 24-year-old Dickens Tito arrived at the station carrying a parcel of rice, which he said was intended for a remand prisoner.
Officers inspecting the meal reportedly discovered the cannabis concealed beneath the rice.
Tito was arrested immediately and placed in custody as investigators sought to establish the intended recipient and source of the drugs.
Briefcase exposes second consignment
The second arrest occurred at a multi-agency roadblock in Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway.
Security officers stopped a public service vehicle travelling from Kitui to Embu and searched luggage stored in its rear compartment.
During the inspection, officers recovered a pink briefcase allegedly belonging to 29-year-old Justice Kabila Njanja.
The DCI said the briefcase contained 13 bales of cannabis wrapped in yellow sealing tape.
Njanja was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
Police said the two suspects would be arraigned after investigations were completed. The seized cannabis was retained as evidence.
The DCI said it would continue working with other security agencies to disrupt narcotics distribution networks and intercept illegal consignments.
The allegations against the suspects have not been tested in court.
