NAIROBI, Kenya- The Linda Mwananchi movement has announced that Kenyans have contributed more than Sh2 million through its public fundraising drive, marking a significant milestone for the citizen-funded political initiative championed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
The fundraising campaign, launched earlier this week, has attracted thousands of small donations from supporters responding to Sifuna’s appeal for Kenyans to contribute as little as Sh10 to sustain the movement’s activities.
The latest milestone represents a sharp increase from the Sh519,144 raised within the first day of the campaign, when 9,419 contributors made donations averaging Sh55 each.
Sifuna has repeatedly defended the fundraising initiative, saying it demonstrates that the movement is powered by ordinary Kenyans rather than wealthy political financiers.
“We are a different generation of leaders,” the Nairobi senator said while unveiling the paybill, arguing that he would rather receive small contributions from millions of Kenyans than depend on a handful of wealthy donors.
The Linda Mwananchi movement has positioned the fundraising model as a symbol of grassroots politics, encouraging supporters to make voluntary contributions through its M-Pesa paybill to finance rallies, civic mobilisation and operational expenses.
Sifuna has also pledged transparency in the management of the funds, saying contributors will be regularly informed about how much has been raised and how the money is spent.
He explained that because Linda Mwananchi is not yet registered as a political party, the paybill is registered under his official name.
The fundraising campaign has gained momentum on social media, with supporters portraying it as an alternative model of financing political movements through small individual donations instead of relying on wealthy sponsors.
