NAIROBI, Kenya- Elvis Opiyo, the man accused of orchestrating the acid attack on Kenyan Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) gospel singer Mary Claire Ochieng, has died.
Opiyo was found dead at his residence in Nairobi’s Umoja estate on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, while he was out on bond, according to local reports.
His death has taken a new turn in a case that began in March and left the young singer with severe, life-changing injuries.
Authorities had identified Opiyo as the prime suspect in the attack and arrested him after investigators linked him to the assault. He had denied the allegations in court.
What happened to Mary Claire?
Mary Claire Ochieng was attacked with acid along Ngong Road in Nairobi in March 2026.
The gospel singer suffered severe burns in the attack, including injuries to her face, chest and arms. She was subsequently admitted to hospital for treatment and has continued her recovery.
The attack sparked public outrage and renewed concerns about violence against women, particularly cases involving former partners.
Mary Claire later spoke publicly about the events leading up to the attack, alleging that her relationship with Opiyo had deteriorated after she decided to leave him.
She claimed that Opiyo had refused to accept the end of their relationship and had subjected her to threats and other forms of alleged violence before the acid attack.
Opiyo was accused of orchestrating the attack
Investigators alleged that Opiyo did not personally throw the acid but instead arranged for other people to carry out the attack.
Police arrested him in March as detectives investigated whether the assault had been planned in advance. He was later charged in connection with an earlier assault involving Mary Claire, while detectives continued investigating the more serious March attack.
Court proceedings also brought forward allegations about Opiyo’s movements around the time of the attack.
CCTV footage reportedly placed him at a medical facility where Mary Claire had been taken for treatment shortly after the assault. Investigators viewed his presence there as potentially significant to the case.
However, the allegations against Opiyo had not been proven in court before his death.
Mary Claire had previously spoken about alleged threats
Months after the attack, Mary Claire broke her silence and detailed what she described as a prolonged period of threats and violence. In interviews published in June, she alleged that she had experienced several attacks before the incident that left her severely burned.
She also shared messages that she said Opiyo had sent her after she ended their relationship. According to her account, the relationship had ended after she discovered that Opiyo was married and had children. She alleged that his efforts to persuade her to return to the relationship later escalated into threats and violence.
She also disputed claims that Opiyo had paid her university fees during their relationship, saying she had received government sponsorship and that her family covered the remaining costs.
Other suspects remain part of the investigation
Opiyo’s death does not necessarily bring the entire acid attack investigation to an end. Other people suspected of involvement in the attack have also faced investigation.
Earlier court proceedings identified other suspects, including the man accused of physically carrying out the acid assault. Police also continued looking into the alleged involvement of people who may have helped transport or facilitate the attackers.
Reports also indicated that another suspect was arrested shortly before Opiyo’s death, widening the investigation beyond the former prime suspect.
The continued investigation will therefore determine whether other individuals can be held accountable for the attack.
