NAIROBI, Kenya – Presidential Aspirant Fred Matiang’i has hosted a delegation of Nubian community elders in Nairobi and called for greater unity among Kenyans as he continues his political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i said the elders paid him a courtesy visit at his Nairobi office on Monday, August 31, 2026, and shared what he described as a special message from the Nubian community.
In a post on his official X account, the former Cabinet secretary thanked the elders for the visit and the discussions they held.
“This morning, I received Nubian community elders at my office in Nairobi, who paid me a courtesy visit and shared a special message from the community,” he said.
Matiang’i said he appreciated the wisdom shared during the meeting and highlighted the importance of unity among Kenyans.
“I deeply appreciate the visit, the wisdom shared and the spirit of unity that continues to bring us together as one people with a shared future,” he added.
Matiang’i keeps details of meeting private
The former Cabinet secretary did not disclose the identities of the elders or provide details about the message they delivered during the meeting.
He also did not indicate whether the discussions focused on politics, community affairs or other issues.
The meeting comes as Matiang’i continues to expand his political engagements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Matiang’i, who serves as Jubilee Party Deputy Leader, is seeking the party’s presidential ticket and has been campaigning in different parts of the country.
He has also been involved in efforts to build a united opposition ahead of the 2027 polls, as political parties and leaders position themselves for the contest.
Matiang’i questions police uniform spending
Earlier on Monday, Matiang’i criticised government spending on the rollout of Kenya’s new police uniform, questioning whether the State was getting sufficient value from the resources being used.
He argued that the government should make greater use of existing capacity within public institutions instead of automatically procuring goods and services from external suppliers.
“Government does not always have to buy everything,” Matiang’i said.
The former Interior CS referred to the previous change of police uniforms during his tenure, saying the government worked with public institutions and private-sector players to utilise existing skills, facilities and capabilities.
According to Matiang’i, that approach helped manage costs while strengthening local capacity and creating opportunities for Kenyans.
His comments came after President William Ruto unveiled the new Kenya Police Service uniform at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.
The National Police Service has defended the new uniform, saying the design followed consultations with police officers and members of the public and is intended to improve officers’ morale and professionalism.
Former CS calls for value for money
Matiang’i said the debate should not be limited to the appearance of the new uniform but should also examine how public resources are being spent.
“As we discuss another change of police uniforms today, we should ask a bigger question: Are we getting the greatest possible value from the resources available to us?” he posed.
He argued that government effectiveness should ultimately be measured by what the State achieves with public resources rather than simply by the amount it spends.
“The test of leadership is not how much government spends. It is what government achieves with what it spends,” Matiang’i said.
The remarks add an economic-governance dimension to Matiang’i’s growing political profile as he seeks to position himself ahead of the 2027 election.
