NAIROBI, Kenya – Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has been discharged from Nairobi Hospital after a two-week stay that drew public attention to his health and kept the veteran politician away from the political scene.
The Siaya Senator reportedly left the facility on October 19, having been admitted on October 4. His discharge comes days after he publicly challenged speculation about his condition, insisting that being unwell did not oblige him to disclose his medical details.
Oburu’s hospitalisation attracted growing attention as his absence coincided with a significant period for ODM, which is navigating its future following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The party leader addressed the speculation on October 15, when he marked his 83rd birthday in hospital. The date also marked the first anniversary of Raila’s death.
Oburu Defends His Right to Keep Illness Private
During his hospital appearance, Oburu expressed disappointment with people who had questioned his whereabouts, saying some had made sarcastic remarks about his illness.
He maintained that his condition was a normal human experience and should not have become a subject of public speculation simply because he holds a senior political position.
“I’ve been sick like any other Kenyan can be sick, and like any other human being can be sick,” he said.
The ODM leader also criticised those he accused of appearing pleased by his illness, asking God to help them.
His strongest message, however, was directed at those who believed his absence required a public explanation.
“Sickness is not public. I have no obligation whatsoever to announce my sickness. Nobody has an obligation to announce or make public their illness,” he stated.
Oburu acknowledged that he had not fully recovered but sought to reassure Kenyans that he was alive and improving.
“Those spreading rumours about me, here I am!” he declared.
He added that although he was “not quite well”, he believed he was on the road to recovery.
Birthday Marked by Memories of Raila
Oburu’s birthday carried a personal significance beyond his recovery, coinciding with the first anniversary of the death of his younger brother, Raila.
In a message shared on social media, the senator reflected on the emotional weight of celebrating his birthday on the same date that his brother died.
“Today, October 15th, is far more than just a date on the calendar; it is a sacred intersection of life and eternity,” he wrote.
He described their relationship as a lasting bond that had endured beyond Raila’s death, reflecting on the years they spent together in family life and politics.
The occasion brought together two major moments in Oburu’s life: his own birthday and the remembrance of a brother whose political legacy continues to shape ODM’s direction.
Discharge Comes at a Critical Moment for ODM
Oburu’s return home comes as ODM faces questions about its leadership, political alliances and strategy ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Since Raila’s death, Oburu has taken on the responsibility of leading the party through a sensitive transition, placing his public engagements and political decisions under increased scrutiny.
His absence from public events during his hospital stay had therefore attracted attention beyond concerns about his personal wellbeing.
However, Oburu’s remarks made clear that he wanted a distinction between his responsibilities as a political leader and his right to medical privacy.
His discharge ends the reported hospital stay, but he indicated during his October 15 appearance that he was still recovering. No detailed medical diagnosis was disclosed in the reports reviewed.
