NAIROBI, Kenya – Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Catherine Omanyo has dismissed reports suggesting that party leader Oburu Oginga’s health is deteriorating, assuring Kenyans that the veteran politician is recovering well after being unwell.
Speaking in an interview with a local television station on Monday, October 12, 2026, Omanyo said Oburu was recuperating and criticised reports she described as yellow journalism.
“He was unwell, yes, but he’s recuperating well. He’s okay,” Omanyo said in a video shared on her X account.
She noted that Oburu’s age required him to rest and follow medical advice, adding that his absence from public events should not be interpreted as evidence that his condition was worsening.
“It’s not a must you see the party leader every day on the screen, but he’s so alive and kicking,” she said.
Her remarks come amid growing public concern over the health of the ODM leader, whose recent absence from key political and public engagements has fuelled speculation on social media.
Omanyo Urges Public To Ignore Unverified Reports
Omanyo expressed concern over reports circulating about Oburu’s condition, saying unverified information was distressing to the party and those close to the veteran politician.
“Ignore the yellow journalism we are seeing everywhere, trying to kill him, and yet he’s so alive and kicking,” she said.
The senator also urged Kenyans to show compassion and recognise that health challenges can affect individuals, families and institutions.
She appealed for prayers and support as Oburu continues his recovery.
Ruto Confirms Oburu Is Receiving Medical Attention
President William Ruto previously assured residents of Bondo that Oburu remained part of the ODM leadership despite receiving medical attention.
Speaking on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, during the handover of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s mausoleum in Bondo, Ruto said he had received greetings from the Siaya senator.
“Ako kidogo na mambo, anashughulika na mambo ya hospitali,” Ruto said, indicating that Oburu was attending to medical matters.
The President added: “Lakini mimi nataka niwahakikishie huyo mzee ni chairman, ni party leader wetu na tunamheshimu sana.”
Oburu’s Secretariat Denies Malicious Health Claims
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Oburu’s secretariat also condemned what it described as malicious and unfounded reports circulating on social media about his health.
In a statement, the secretariat said the ODM leader was safe and in good spirits while following doctors’ instructions to rest and limit physical engagements.
“We wish to assure the general public, members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the people of Siaya County, and the entire nation that Oburu Oginga is well, safe, and in good spirits,” the statement read.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga had also reported that Oburu was recovering steadily after visiting him.
The latest update adds to assurances from ODM officials and other leaders urging the public to rely on verified information as the veteran politician recuperates.
