SIAYA, Kenya – Siaya Governor James Orengo has condemned what he describes as coordinated attacks against Canon Ida Odinga following controversy over the first anniversary commemoration of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 19, 2026, Orengo expressed concern over the criticism directed at Ida, defending her role in Kenya’s struggle for democracy and her contribution to Raila’s political journey.
“Ida Odinga was not just Raila’s wife but a fighter in the struggle against oppression, injustice and despotism,” Orengo said.
The governor accused critics of directing propaganda and hostility at the Odinga family, warning that the attacks risked undermining the legacy of the late opposition leader.
He further alleged that individuals he described as “mercenaries” had begun challenging Raila’s legacy even before his death, accusing them of betraying the ideals he championed.
“They have sold the party and now want to throw Raila Odinga’s legacy to the dustbin of history. It will never happen,” Orengo said.
The governor concluded his statement with the slogan “Aluta continua”, meaning the struggle continues, reaffirming his support for Ida and the Odinga family.
Dispute Over Raila’s Anniversary Commemoration
Orengo’s remarks come amid controversy surrounding the October 15 commemoration of Raila at Migwena Grounds, where the participation of opposition leaders triggered debate among sections of the political class.
Some politicians allied to the government questioned the decision to invite opposition figures to the event, which they described as state-sponsored.
The Odinga family defended the invitations, arguing that the decision reflected Raila’s commitment to democracy and his ability to maintain relationships across political divides.
Ida also criticised the conduct of some politicians, accusing them of mobilising crowds that disrupted the event and booed some of the leaders who attended to honour her late husband.
The controversy has since widened into a debate over who should shape Raila’s political legacy and how his ideals should be preserved following his death.
Pressure Mounts Over ODM’s Political Direction
Orengo’s statement also comes amid growing disagreements over the direction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following Raila’s death.
His remarks suggest concern among some of Raila’s allies that internal party disputes and political realignments could weaken the principles associated with the veteran opposition leader.
The governor maintained that attempts to undermine Raila’s legacy would not succeed, insisting that his contribution to Kenya’s political and democratic struggles would endure.
