Parliament Begins Funeral Plans for Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Parliament of Kenya has commenced funeral preparations for the late Ol Kalou Member of Parliament David Njuguna Kiaraho, following his death on Sunday while undergoing treatment.

A delegation of lawmakers visited the legislator’s home in Runda, Nairobi, where they condoled with the family and initiated plans for his burial, marking the beginning of an official parliamentary send-off.

In a formal communication, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described Kiaraho as a dedicated and committed public servant, praising his contribution to legislative work.

“To the family of the late legislator and to all Kenyans, we thank God for the life He gave Hon. Kiaraho. We mourn the departed soul,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker also announced the formation of a Funeral Preparation Committee tasked with liaising with the family and coordinating burial arrangements.

The committee will be chaired by Kinangop MP Kwenya Thuku, with Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau serving as deputy, alongside seven other Members of Parliament.

Among those who visited the family on Sunday were Thuku, Gitau, Wajir East MP Aden Daudi, and Kiambaa MP John Wanjiku.

They were accompanied by parliamentary staff led by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Samuel Njoroge, where the first planning meeting was held.

Kiaraho, who died at the age of 62, was serving his third term in Parliament, having first been elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017 and 2022.

During his tenure, he served in the Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure as well as the Procedure and House Rules Committee.

Born on October 2, 1963, the late legislator attended Alliance High School and Nairobi School before joining the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.

Before entering politics, Kiaraho built a career as an architect and served as Principal Architect at Archgrid Systems, contributing to infrastructure and built-environment projects across the country.

His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from leaders across the political divide, with many describing him as a committed leader and development-oriented legislator.

As preparations for his final send-off gather pace, Parliament’s involvement underscores the significance of his role in national leadership, while also setting the stage for a by-election in Ol Kalou Constituency in line with constitutional requirements.
