NAIROBI, Kenya – Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau has received congratulatory messages from leaders across the political divide after winning the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election in a landslide that handed the party its first-ever seat in the National Assembly.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Kamau the winner after he garnered 35,440 votes, comfortably defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who secured 5,450 votes.
The victory attracted praise from both government and opposition leaders, many of whom urged the MP-elect to unite residents and prioritize development in the Nyandarua constituency.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was among the first senior government officials to congratulate Kamau, even before the IEBC formally announced the final results.
Kindiki called on the MP-elect to serve all residents without discrimination while also commending UDA candidate Samuel Muchina for running what he described as a mature and issue-based campaign.
DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua described the outcome as a historic moment for the party, saying the victory reflected the will of the people and marked DCP’s entry into Parliament with its maiden parliamentary seat.
Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who actively campaigned for Kamau, thanked Ol Kalou residents for their support, saying voters had spoken decisively through the ballot.
Opposition leaders also celebrated the outcome, with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka saying the results demonstrated the determination of Ol Kalou voters to elect their preferred candidate.
People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua congratulated Kamau and lauded residents for peacefully exercising their democratic right.
From the Kenya Kwanza side, Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome said the government respected the decision made by voters, while Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga urged the MP-elect to lead with humility and dedication.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru also congratulated both Kamau and his closest challenger for conducting a competitive contest.
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro praised Kamau’s victory and also recognized Senator John Methu and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia for leading a successful campaign.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the by-election results reflected Kenya’s democratic maturity, noting that political parties were able to compete freely and secure victories in areas where they enjoyed public support.
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi also congratulated Kamau while acknowledging UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah for putting up a spirited campaign.
Kamau’s decisive victory marks a significant milestone for the Democracy for the Citizens Party, which now has its first representative in Parliament since its formation.
