NAIROBI, Kenya- Two suspects linked to the brutal killing of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari have been arrested, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed.
In a statement issued on Saturday, DCI Director Mohamed Amin said detectives had made a breakthrough in investigations into the murder of the cleric, whose death sparked outrage and fear among members of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA).
The two suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to assist investigators as authorities piece together the circumstances surrounding the killing.
During the attack, the church watchman sustained injuries.
“Meanwhile, detectives are conducting advanced forensic analyses and meticulously reviewing critical evidence believed to be linked to a wider criminal network behind this heinous act,” the DCI said.
The DCI said detectives had been pursuing several leads since the body of Reverend Ndumia was discovered, with investigators analysing forensic evidence and witness accounts before making the arrests.
Although the agency did not immediately disclose the identities of the suspects or details surrounding the motive, it said investigations were at an advanced stage and more arrests could follow.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations wishes to confirm the arrest of two suspects linked to the murder of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari. Investigations remain ongoing,” part of the statement read.
The murder of Reverend Ndumia had triggered widespread condemnation from religious leaders, politicians and human rights activists, many demanding swift action from security agencies.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had earlier criticised police over what he termed delayed action and silence following the killing, saying the incident had created fear among clergy across the country.
Gachagua also questioned whether the cleric may have been targeted because of his outspoken views on governance, corruption and human rights.
The killing had intensified concerns over the safety of religious leaders after reports of attacks and break-ins targeting churches in different parts of the country.
The PCEA fraternity has been mourning Reverend Ndumia as a dedicated church leader whose death shocked worshippers and residents.
Police have urged members of the public with information that could assist investigations to cooperate with detectives as the probe continues.
