KIRINYAGA, Kenya — Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged voters in his Mt Kenya political base not to repeat what he described as a mistake made in the 2022 General Election when they backed President William Ruto.
Speaking on Saturday during the burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Uhuru recalled how he had advised the region ahead of the 2022 election but was ignored.
He said he believed the partnership between the late Raila Odinga and Martha Karua could have delivered what he described as better leadership for the country.
“I am happy, even after you people refused to listen to me. That is upon you. When I told you, you were making the wrong decision, you all thought you knew better,” Uhuru said.
Uhuru Invokes ‘Mistake’ Message
The retired president then turned his attention to the 2027 election, asking residents whether they intended to repeat what he characterised as a past mistake.
“A mistake is not a mistake unless it is repeated. Kirinyaga residents, will you make the same mistake? Kirinyaga residents, will you repeat the mistake?” Uhuru asked.
The remarks were made during a politically charged funeral attended by several opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Edwin Sifuna and Eugene Wamalwa.
Uhuru Responds To ‘Sponsor’ Label
The former president also addressed criticism that he is sponsoring opposition political activities.
He said he was content with his record in public office and dismissed the labels being directed at him.
“Hata wakinitukana, wananiita sponsor, rebel leader, mlevi, sijui kesho wataniita nini. Mimi nawaangalia, nacheka,” Uhuru said.
He criticised politicians who, in his view, preach against insults in churches before engaging in similar exchanges outside church settings.
Uhuru said his focus was not on seeking another political position.
Opposition Leaders Urged To Unite
The funeral also provided a platform for calls for opposition leaders seeking the presidency in 2027 to unite behind a single candidate.
Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina urged politicians including Martha Karua, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i and Edwin Sifuna to resolve their differences and agree on one presidential candidate.
She said voters wanted the opposition figures to settle their differences and present a single candidate for the 2027 contest.
Uhuru subsequently asked mourners whether they agreed with the proposal and called on those who had heard the message to take note.
The remarks came as opposition parties and political figures continue to discuss possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
