NAIROBI, Kenya — The dispute over the “Ukombozi” political brand has taken a new turn after Wiper Patriotic Front spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru claimed that Kalonzo Musyoka had been using the terminology months before it became associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s political project.
Njiru’s remarks came amid speculation over a possible clash between supporters of Kalonzo and Sifuna following the decision by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition to rebrand as the Ukombozi Alliance.
Kalonzo announced the new name on Monday, September 21, saying the decision had been reached unanimously by the coalition’s leadership.
The rebranding has coincided with a separate attempt by allies associated with Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya to establish a political vehicle under the name Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP).
Wiper Says Kalonzo Used ‘Ukombozi’ First
Njiru sought to challenge suggestions that Kalonzo adopted the Ukombozi identity in response to Sifuna’s political plans.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Njiru said Kalonzo had been using the phrase “Komboa Kenya” as early as April 2025.
“The word Ukomboa has given birth to Ukombozi,” Njiru wrote.
He argued that records would show Kalonzo had promoted the terminology while Sifuna was still ODM secretary-general and before the current Ukombozi political project emerged.
The claim is part of Wiper’s effort to establish an earlier timeline for Kalonzo’s use of the terminology; it does not by itself establish ownership of the political name or settle the dispute over its use.
Wiper’s official website currently identifies Njiru as the party’s spokesperson and uses “Komboa Kenya” prominently in its political messaging.
Kalonzo Unveils Ukombozi Alliance
Kalonzo announced Monday that Azimio would henceforth operate as the Ukombozi Alliance (TUA).
“After today, even this podium will change because the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has this day, September 21, 2026, unanimously agreed to rebrand and change the name to Ukombozi Alliance,” Kalonzo said.
He said the rebranding marked a new phase for the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The alliance has adopted the political philosophy “One Term, One Team, One Coalition” as opposition parties reorganise and hold consultations ahead of the election.
Kalonzo also said the coalition was seeking to avoid divisions and keep opposition parties working together.
Sifuna-Linked Ukombozi Plan Hits ORPP Hurdle
The dispute over the name comes against the backdrop of a separate political initiative associated with Sifuna and Natembeya.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) had sought to change its name to Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP), a vehicle reportedly linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement.
However, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) rejected the proposed name.
In a letter dated September 8, Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou said the office had not approved or authorised UDP to use the proposed Ukombozi People’s Party name.
The Registrar cited Section 8(c) of the Political Parties Act, which allows the rejection of a proposed party name, abbreviation, slogan or symbol where it closely resembles that of another registered party or legal entity and could cause confusion.
The ORPP specifically said the proposed Ukombozi People’s Party name resembled The Ukombozi Alliance, which had been reserved by another applicant on July 20, 2026.
The United Democratic Party had itself publicly announced the proposed adoption of the Ukombozi People’s Party name in August.
Kalonzo Plays Down Possible Opposition Split
Kalonzo has sought to prevent the dispute over the name from becoming a wider source of division within the opposition.
Explaining the decision to rebrand Azimio, he said the coalition was aware that the Linda Mwananchi camp was awaiting a decision from the Registrar of Political Parties.
He said the opposition needed to move quickly because of the limited time remaining before the 2027 elections.
“We understand that Linda Mwananchi are waiting for a decision from the Registrar of Political Parties. We understand that time is of the essence, and we are only trying to save time,” Kalonzo said.
He also said differences over the names should not result in a split.
“As long as we are one team at the end, then there is no problem with that,” he said.
Ukombozi Name Becomes New Opposition Fault Line
The developments have created an unusual overlap between two opposition initiatives seeking to use the Ukombozi identity.
On one side is the newly rebranded Ukombozi Alliance, formed out of the Azimio coalition. On the other is the Ukombozi People’s Party proposal associated with the Linda Mwananchi political project.
The ORPP decision means the proposed UPP name cannot currently be used as submitted, while the Ukombozi Alliance has already been publicly unveiled by the Azimio coalition.
The competing claims over when the term was first adopted are therefore emerging alongside a broader reorganisation of Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
