NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenya’s political landscape just got a major shake-up. The National Assembly has opened the floor for public participation in the Special Motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
As lawmakers prepare to deliberate on the motion, Kenyans are being called upon to share their views, with submissions open until October 5th, 2024.
The stakes are high, as the motion, tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, accuses the Deputy President of multiple constitutional violations.
In a public notice issued by Samuel Njoroge, the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kenyans were invited to submit their views on the impeachment motion either online via impeachment@parliament.go.ke or by visiting designated collection centers.
The public submissions close on October 5th, 2024, at 5:00 PM, with a separate deadline for in-person submissions set for October 4th, 2024.
The motion to impeach DP Gachagua has garnered significant support, with 291 Members of Parliament signing it on Tuesday afternoon.
Mutuse’s 57-page motion outlines ten grounds for the Deputy President’s removal, citing gross violations of key laws such as the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, and the National Cohesion and Integration Act.
Beyond the financial allegations, the motion also targets Gachagua for what it describes as “persistent inflammatory, reckless, inciteful public utterances” that have fueled ethnic tensions in Kenya.
Regardless of the outcome, this marks an important moment for Kenya’s democratic institutions, with transparency and public participation playing key roles in shaping the nation’s political landscape.
