Vihiga Hosts First-Ever Labour Day Celebrations Outside Nairobi

Date:

VIHIGA, Kenya — All preparations have been completed ahead of the 2026 Labour Day celebrations at Chavakali Boys High School in Vihiga County, marking a historic first for the country.

For the first time since independence, the national Labour Day event is being held outside Nairobi, with Vihiga becoming the first county to host the celebrations.

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said the government had finalised preparations in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure the event runs smoothly.

The celebrations are expected to be presided over by President William Ruto.

Security has been significantly heightened around the venue and surrounding areas, with a multi-agency security team deployed to manage crowds and maintain public order during the event.

Kenyans began arriving at the venue as early as 4 a.m., with hundreds streaming into Chavakali Boys High School ahead of the official programme.

Labour Day, commemorated on May 1, recognises the contribution of workers to national development and highlights the role of trade unions in advancing labour rights and workplace protections.

In Kenya, the annual celebrations are organised in partnership with the Central Organization of Trade Unions Kenya (COTU-K) and serve as a platform for discussions on workers’ welfare, employment opportunities, labour policies, salaries, and economic challenges facing the workforce.

This year’s event comes amid growing concerns over unemployment, rising living costs, and calls by workers’ unions for improved pay and working conditions across several sectors.

The decision to hold the celebrations in Vihiga is also seen as part of broader efforts by the government to decentralise national events and promote regional inclusion beyond the capital.

Local leaders and businesses are expected to benefit from increased economic activity generated by the influx of visitors attending the celebrations.
