Mike Sonko Announces Sale of Club Volume VIP After Quitting Alcohol Business

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced plans to sell or lease his multimillion-shilling Club Volume VIP in Mombasa, saying the decision follows a personal move to exit the alcohol business after embracing a new spiritual path.

In a post shared on X on April 2, Sonko said his renewed relationship with God prompted him to withdraw from ventures linked to alcohol, adding that the nightclub no longer aligns with his values.

“Since choosing to leave alcohol and draw closer to God, I have made a firm decision to exit the alcohol business completely,” he said.

The former governor added that he is considering selling or leasing the club, or alternatively giving away all alcohol stock, describing the move as the beginning of a new chapter.

“I will sell or lease the VIP Club or give away all alcohol stock. This marks a new chapter in my life,” Sonko stated.

In a 24-minute video accompanying the post, Sonko toured the establishment and said the business could generate Sh30 million or more during a single weekend, a claim that drew mixed reactions online.

The multi-level venue features several bars and upscale finishes, including LED lighting, granite countertops, and gold-themed interior décor.

Online reactions were divided, with some users congratulating him for pursuing a spiritual shift, while others questioned the decision to exit a profitable venture. Some commenters described the move as personal growth, while others raised concerns about the source of wealth used to develop the club, referencing corruption allegations during his tenure at City Hall.

The impeachment of Mike Sonko in December 2020 followed Senate proceedings over governance and corruption claims, which Sonko had previously contested.

The announcement also sparked speculation after some users noted that the video carried an April 1 timestamp, suggesting the possibility that the statement could be linked to April Fool’s Day.

Sonko did not immediately clarify whether the announcement was symbolic or part of a formal sale process.

The development adds to a series of public lifestyle and business shifts by the former governor, who has in recent months shared religious-themed messages and personal reflections on social media.

Whether the club will be formally listed for sale or lease remains unclear, but the announcement has triggered debate about personal transformation, public perception, and the intersection of business and faith in high-profile political figures.
