OL KALOU, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared Nyandarua County the official headquarters of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after the party secured its first parliamentary seat in the Ol Kalou by-election.
Speaking during a thanksgiving tour of the constituency on Friday, Gachagua said Nyandarua had earned the recognition by delivering DCP’s maiden victory in a parliamentary election.
“On behalf of the community, I declare Nyandarua County the headquarters of the DCP. Well done, the people of Nyandarua,” Gachagua said.
‘A Turning Point’ for DCP
Gachagua described the Ol Kalou victory as a defining moment for the party, saying it marked the beginning of DCP’s national political journey.
He pledged to mentor a new generation of leaders to ensure continuity in leadership within the region.
“Never again shall this community find itself in the awkward position we found ourselves in. I am going to mentor many great leaders and prepare them for leadership so that at any one time the community is aware of the succession matters in our leadership structure,” he said.
Thanks to Voters and Campaign Team
The former Deputy President thanked senators, Members of Parliament, Members of County Assembly and party supporters who campaigned for DCP candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru during the three-month campaign.
He also praised residents of Ol Kalou for turning out in large numbers to vote.
“I want to say thank you to the people of Ol Kalou. You made this country proud. You came out in overwhelming numbers,” he said.
Eyes on the 2027 General Election
Gachagua said the party would now shift its focus to expanding its national footprint ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He announced that DCP intends to field candidates in all 47 counties for the positions of:
- Governor
- Senator
- Woman Representative
- Member of Parliament
- Member of County Assembly (MCA)
He said the party aims to win:
- 20 governorships
- 20 Senate seats
- 145 parliamentary seats
- 720 MCA seats
According to Gachagua, DCP will conduct free, fair and transparent party nominations to give all aspirants an equal opportunity to compete for the party ticket.
DCP’s First Parliamentary Seat
The declaration comes a day after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru the winner of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
According to the official results, Waweru garnered 35,440 votes, defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who received 5,450 votes.
The victory handed DCP its first parliamentary seat since the party’s formation and has been widely viewed as a significant political boost for Gachagua and his allies as they prepare for the next general election.
