HELB Opens Loan Applications for KMTC Students: How to Apply

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has officially opened the loan application window for students enrolled at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), offering much-needed financial support to cover tuition and other learning-related expenses.

The initiative follows a strategic partnership between HELB and KMTC aimed at easing the financial burden on students pursuing certificate and diploma programmes in health-related fields across the country.

In a statement, HELB confirmed that the application window is open to both new and continuing students.

“This financing scheme is designed to enhance access to healthcare education by supporting students who might otherwise struggle to meet the costs,” the board stated.

How to Apply

New Students
First-time applicants are required to visit the HELB website at www.hef.co.ke, create an account using their national ID, a valid email address, and a mobile number registered in their name.

Once registered, students must activate their account via a link sent to their email, log in, and complete their profile with personal, residential, educational, and parental details. They are also required to upload relevant documents to support their application.

Applicants must then navigate to the loan application section, select the KMTC student financing scheme, agree to the terms and conditions, and provide guarantor details before submitting their application.

Continuing Students
Those who have previously received HELB funding must apply through the HELB mobile app, available on the Google Play Store, or by dialing *642#.

They must register using their personal mobile number — which must be in their own name — to receive a one-time password for access.

Once logged in, continuing students can update their details and submit their application for continued financial support.

Supporting Education Access

The rollout of this dedicated KMTC loan scheme comes after the government allocated Sh58.5 billion for higher education through HELB and scholarships, a move aimed at promoting inclusive access to learning and reducing dropout rates driven by financial hardship.

HELB has urged all eligible KMTC students to apply within the stipulated period, noting that timely applications will help ensure seamless disbursement of funds.

The partnership is expected to benefit thousands of students across KMTC’s 70-plus campuses nationwide, and aligns with national goals to strengthen the country’s healthcare workforce by removing financial barriers to medical training.
