NAIROBI, Kenya – Comedian and radio presenter MCA Tricky has clarified that he did not resign from Milele FM, revealing that the station fired him while he was in Germany pursuing his Master’s degree.
The comedian, whose real name is Francis Munyao, made the revelation during an appearance on the Tubonge podcast hosted by his former radio colleague Chris The Baze.
Tricky said he was surprised by reports that he had voluntarily walked away from the Mediamax Network-owned station after six years.
“I don’t know why the media chose to say that I walked away, but let me be honest, I did not walk away, they fired me,” he said.
His clarification provides a different account of his departure from Milele FM, which had initially been presented as a disagreement between the presenter and management over his request for time away from the station to pursue his studies.
Tricky explained that he had requested a short period of unpaid leave from Milele FM to attend a three-month engineering exchange programme in Germany.
The comedian is a trained mechatronics engineer and had secured an opportunity to further his studies as part of his Master’s degree programme.
According to Tricky, he informed his employer about the academic opportunity and provided the necessary documentation, including his invitation letter. He expected to return to his radio duties after completing the programme.
However, while he was in Germany, Tricky said he received an unexpected email from the company informing him that his employment had been terminated.
“I will be honest. I didn’t walk away… They fired me,” he reiterated.
The comedian said the decision caught him off guard because he had not intended to leave Milele FM permanently.
Tricky said the termination email explained that the company was experiencing financial losses because of his absence from the morning show.
According to the presenter, management indicated that his absence was affecting the station’s revenue. The explanation became the basis for the termination while he was away pursuing his studies.
The comedian also addressed the impression that his departure from Milele FM meant he had relocated permanently to Germany. Tricky clarified that he remains in Nairobi, where he has turned his attention to creating independent digital content.
His academic trip to Germany was linked to his engineering studies and was not an indication that he planned to permanently leave Kenya.
Tricky spent six years at Milele FM, where he established himself as one of the station’s popular radio personalities. His time at the station combined comedy and radio presenting, building on his career as a comedian and entertainer.
The comedian said that despite how his employment ended, he remains grateful for the opportunity Milele FM gave him.
