MOMBASA, Kenya — A man has surrendered to police after allegedly killing his wife and one of their children in Shauri Yako Village, Mombasa, with their injured 14-year-old son escaping the attack and being rushed to hospital.
The incident occurred on Friday morning, September 25, in Mkomani Sub-location, Kongowea Location, within Nyali Sub-County, according to a police incident report.
The suspect was identified as Richard Matiko, who later reported himself at Nyali Police Station.
Police said the alleged killings followed family conflicts, although investigations into the circumstances were ongoing.
Child’s Body Allegedly Placed in Pit Latrine
According to the police report, Matiko allegedly attacked his wife and one of their young children before attempting to dispose of their bodies.
Police said the child’s body was placed in a pit latrine.
The suspect allegedly attempted to dispose of his wife’s body in the same way but was unable to do so because of its weight.
The bodies were later taken to the Coast General mortuary for preservation and further procedures.
Injured 14-Year-Old Son Escapes
The couple’s 14-year-old son, identified in the police report as Charles Mburu, escaped from the scene despite sustaining injuries.
Mburu, a Grade 9 student at Pentrose School, was assisted by a Good Samaritan who rushed him to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Police did not immediately provide details on the nature or extent of the boy’s injuries.
The surviving child is expected to remain an important witness as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Good Samaritan Alerts Police
The Good Samaritan who assisted the injured boy subsequently reported the incident at Nyali Police Station.
Police said an Occurrence Book (OB) entry was made following the report.
A Health Promoter, identified as Allan Waisike, had earlier alerted authorities about the incident, according to the police report.
Suspect Surrenders at Nyali Police Station
Police said Matiko subsequently reported himself at Nyali Police Station.
His surrender came after the alleged attack at the family’s home in Shauri Yako Village.
The police report did not provide details on whether the suspect had been formally charged or the specific circumstances surrounding his surrender.
Investigation Underway
Police have opened investigations into the deaths and the circumstances leading to the alleged attack.
The bodies of the deceased remain at the Coast General mortuary pending preservation and further procedures.
