MLOLONGO, Kenya — Missing activist Boniface Mulinge Muteti is receiving medical treatment at Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo after being found alive in the Lukenya area, with doctors recommending further scans after confirming injuries to his head, chest and feet.
Human rights activist and Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid said on Friday that he was at the hospital with Muteti’s family and fellow activists as the activist continued receiving treatment.
“We’re presently with comrades and family members at Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo to follow up on comrade Muteti’s treatment,” Khalid said.
He added that a doctor had confirmed injuries to Muteti’s head, chest and feet and recommended an X-ray and CT scan to assess the extent of the injuries.
Muteti Found After Four Days
Muteti had been missing for four days before he was found in the Lukenya area of Machakos County early Friday morning.
Khalid previously said Muteti was allegedly left in the area at about 3am, after which he walked a long distance to a Shell petrol station.
A Good Samaritan at the station helped him contact his family using a phone.
Muteti was subsequently taken to hospital in Mlolongo, where he was described as weak, disoriented, and injured.
Doctors Order Further Tests
The latest medical update indicates that doctors have identified injuries affecting several parts of Muteti’s body.
Khalid said the recommended X-ray and CT scan will help doctors determine the extent of the injuries and guide further treatment.
Details on the severity of the injuries and Muteti’s overall medical condition had not been publicly disclosed.
Activist Had Been Missing Since Monday
Muteti disappeared on September 21 after taking part in demonstrations in Nairobi linked to calls for the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye.
According to accounts from his family and fellow activists, Muteti had left colleagues in Nairobi’s Central Business District to print a petition before communication with him was lost.
His disappearance prompted human rights defenders to raise concerns and seek information about his whereabouts.
Court Action Was Filed
The disappearance also led to legal action at the Milimani Law Courts.
The application sought records relating to any alleged arrest, detention, transfer, release or processing of Muteti.
