Rapper Mystikal Slapped With 20-Year Jail Term for Third-Degree Rape

American rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree rape, bringing an end to a high-profile criminal case that has followed the Louisiana artist since his 2022 arrest.

The 55-year-old musician, whose legal name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, received the maximum sentence allowed under his plea agreement on June 16, 2026, during a court hearing in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.

The sentencing marks another dramatic fall for the Grammy-nominated rapper who once dominated early 2000s hip-hop with hit records including “Shake Ya Ass,” “Danger (Been So Long),” and “Bouncin’ Back.”

The prison sentence stems from a violent incident that prosecutors say took place in July 2022 inside Mystikal’s home in Prairieville, Louisiana.

During sentencing, the unnamed victim gave emotional testimony while recounting what she says happened on the night of the assault.

According to her statement in court, Mystikal physically attacked her before sexually assaulting her inside the house. She said the rapper punched her repeatedly, choked her, forcibly pulled out sections of her braided hair, and then raped her against her will.

The woman also told the court that Tyler prevented her from escaping by taking her phone and car keys. She further alleged that he accessed her phone and stole money from her financial accounts during the attack.

Her testimony reportedly left the courtroom silent as details of the alleged assault emerged publicly for the first time in full detail.

Following the victim’s statement, Mystikal directly addressed the court.

“If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” he said.

Shortly afterward, the judge formally sentenced him to 20 years behind bars, the highest prison term allowed under the plea agreement reached earlier this year.

Just days before sentencing, Mystikal’s legal team attempted one final move to avoid prison. His defense lawyers asked the court to allow him to withdraw the guilty plea he entered in March 2026.

They argued that the rapper had been under significant emotional distress at the time and did not fully understand the consequences of accepting the agreement.

The judge rejected the request and proceeded with sentencing. Before reaching the plea agreement, prosecutors had originally charged Mystikal with first-degree rape.

Under state law, a conviction for first-degree rape carries a mandatory life sentence in prison. Prosecutors had also filed additional charges including simple robbery, domestic abuse battery, and false imprisonment.

However, after months of negotiations, Mystikal accepted a plea deal in March 2026. Under the agreement, he pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of third-degree rape.

In exchange, prosecutors dropped nine other pending charges while capping his prison exposure at 20 years. The deal effectively saved him from spending the rest of his life behind bars. Since his arrest in 2022, Mystikal has remained in custody without bond while awaiting trial proceedings.

This latest conviction adds to a troubling legal history that has repeatedly overshadowed Mystikal’s music career. In 2003, the rapper pleaded guilty to sexual battery and extortion in a separate criminal case involving his hairstylist.

That conviction resulted in a six-year prison sentence, and he remained incarcerated until his release in 2010. Years later, in 2017, authorities arrested him again on separate accusations involving rape and kidnapping.

Mystikal spent approximately 18 months in jail while awaiting legal proceedings. However, prosecutors later dropped the case in 2020 after a grand jury declined to issue an indictment.

Despite returning to music several times throughout the years, legal controversies repeatedly interrupted his career.
