Sandra Mbuvi Hints at Running for Kitusuru MCA Seat in 2027

NAIROBI, Kenya — Sandra Mbuvi, daughter of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, has announced she will contest the Kitusuru Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in the 2027 General Elections, marking her formal entry into elective politics.

Sandra shared the news via Instagram stories, posting a campaign poster confirming her candidature under the National Economic and Development Party (NEDP), a party linked to her father.

“You know it, we’re running it,” she wrote.

Campaign Slogan and Priorities

Her campaign slogan, “Kitusuru kwa wote wetu” (Kitusuru for all of us), signals a grassroots appeal to the ward’s diverse electorate.

In her announcement, Sandra outlined a platform centred on youth empowerment programmes, improved healthcare services, better education, safer neighbourhoods, and transparent leadership.

She pledged to work closely with residents to strengthen community development within the ward.

Youth-Focused Messaging

Sandra’s campaign appeared calibrated to attract younger voters, with online supporters rallying behind her call for increased youth participation in governance.

“Young people for government,” one social media user wrote.

Another supporter commented: “We’re voting for you, your dad is a real G.”

Political Dynasty Dynamics

The move extends the Sonko family’s political footprint in Nairobi. Mike Sonko served as Nairobi governor from 2017 until his impeachment in 2020, and has remained an influential figure in city politics through the NEDP.

Sandra’s entry into the Kitusuru race sets up a contest in one of Nairobi County’s 85 elected MCA wards. Members of the County Assembly are responsible for legislation, oversight and representing ward interests at the county level, according to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The announcement positions Sandra as the latest in a growing list of Kenyan political dynasties where children of established politicians seek to convert family name recognition into electoral office, a trend that has drawn both public enthusiasm and criticism over the concentration of political power within elite families.
