Senator Crystal Asige Elated After President Ruto Signs Her Bill into Law: “It’s Yours”

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Senator Crystal Asige is overjoyed after President William Ruto officially signed her Persons with Disabilities Bill 2025 into law, marking a major milestone in the fight for the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities (PWDs) in Kenya.

The new law, which Senator Asige championed, ensures that PWDs have guaranteed access to education, employment, healthcare, political participation, and public spaces.

In her post, Senator Asige expressed her excitement: “SIGNED. SEALED. DELIVERED — it’s yours! My Persons with Disabilities Act is now official. We have changed the law so that we can change the land. Disability is no longer an afterthought — it is at the center.”

The bill, now law, was hailed by President Ruto as a progressive step forward for Kenya, aimed at addressing the social, cultural, and institutional barriers that PWDs have historically faced.

During the signing ceremony at State House Nairobi on Thursday, May 8, 2025, the president emphasized his administration’s commitment to ensuring that PWDs are not excluded from opportunities and that their rights are fully upheld.

The law introduces several key measures, including a restructured council for persons with disabilities, devolution of functions, and recognition and support for caregivers.

Additionally, it introduces economic safeguards, exemptions, and incentives to boost financial resilience for PWDs.

The law also strengthens legal protections, ensuring that persons with disabilities are no longer discriminated against and mandating affirmative action in key sectors.

President Ruto committed to translating the provisions of the law into tangible improvements in the lives of PWDs, ensuring they receive equal opportunities and respect in society.
