NAIROBI, Kenya — South Korea has reaffirmed its support for the Kenya Ports Authority’s (KPA) port modernisation programme, pledging continued collaboration in technology transfer, infrastructure development and capacity building as the Authority accelerates its digital transformation agenda.
The commitment was made on Tuesday when the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to Kenya, Kang Hyung-shik, paid a courtesy call on KPA Chief Executive Officer Captain William Ruto to discuss ongoing cooperation between Kenya and South Korea in the maritime sector.
Focus on Technology and Infrastructure
During the meeting, Ambassador Kang said the strong bilateral relationship between Kenya and South Korea continues to provide opportunities for collaboration in infrastructure development, innovation and knowledge exchange.
He noted that South Korea would continue supporting KPA by sharing advanced port technologies, digital solutions and international best practices to enhance maritime operations.
The discussions centred on strengthening cooperation as the Port of Mombasa continues implementing modern technologies aimed at improving efficiency, trade facilitation and service delivery.
KPA Seeks to Accelerate Digital Transformation
Captain William Ruto welcomed South Korea’s continued support, saying the Authority has benefited from longstanding partnerships with Korean shipping lines, logistics companies and other maritime stakeholders that have contributed to the growth of international trade through the Port of Mombasa.
He said KPA remains committed to expanding collaboration with leading Korean ports to accelerate digitalisation and enhance the competitiveness of Kenya’s principal seaport.
“We will continue strengthening collaboration with leading Korean ports to accelerate digitalisation, improve service delivery and enhance the competitiveness of the Port of Mombasa as the preferred gateway to East and Central Africa,” Captain Ruto said.
Strengthening Bilateral Economic Ties
The meeting builds on growing economic relations between Kenya and South Korea following President William Ruto’s State Visit to Seoul in 2024, which focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure and technology.
KPA said the renewed partnership reflects the shared commitment by both countries to modernise maritime infrastructure, improve logistics efficiency and support regional trade through innovation and digital transformation.
