Tinubu Secures Primary Victory, Set to Seek Second Term in Nigeria

Date:

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is set to seek a second and final four-year term in January after securing an overwhelming victory in the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential primaries.

The party held its primaries on Saturday following a surprise challenge from little-known contender Stanley Osifo.

The 74-year-old emerged victorious with nearly 11 million votes, while Osifo received about 16,500 votes.

Since taking office in 2023, Tinubu has earned praise from foreign investors for implementing some of Nigeria’s most far-reaching economic reforms. These measures include removing fuel and electricity subsidies, ending foreign exchange controls, and introducing major changes to the country’s tax system.

His prospects for re-election were further strengthened after opposition parties failed to form a united front earlier this month.

Bola Tinubu first came to power in 2023 after defeating his two main rivals in a closely contested election.

The outcome was later challenged in court by the opposition, which alleged that the vote had been rigged, though Tinubu maintained that his victory was legitimate
