Gmail Lets Users Change Email Username for First Time in 20 Years

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Google has rolled out a Gmail username change feature for the first time since the service launched in 2004, allowing users to replace outdated or unprofessional email handles without creating new accounts or losing their data.

For two decades, Gmail users have been unable to edit the first part of their email address — the section before “@gmail.com.”

The only workaround was to open a new account and manually migrate emails, contacts, and files, a process that deterred many from updating their digital identities.

The Gmail username change update means users can now replace their handles while keeping everything else intact, including inbox history, Google Drive files, and saved contacts.

This is particularly useful for people who created accounts at a young age, changed names through marriage or other legal processes, or are rebranding professionally.

How the Gmail Username Change Works

If the feature is available on your account, users can follow these steps:

Open Gmail or your Google Account, tap your profile icon, select “Manage your Google Account,” go to “Personal info,” tap “Email,” select “Google Account email,” choose “Change Google Account email,” and follow the prompts.

However, the Gmail username change comes with several limitations and conditions. Users can only change their username once every 12 months.

The previous email address becomes an alias, so messages sent to it will still arrive. Emails, contacts, and files remain unchanged. Users may need to update their email on third-party apps and websites linked to their account.

The desired username must not already be in use.

Gmail Username Change Rollout Status

The feature is not yet available globally. Reports indicate that the rollout has started in select regions, particularly in the United States, and is being introduced gradually to users worldwide. Some users may already see the option, while others may not have access yet.

There is currently no official timeline for when the Gmail username change feature will be fully available worldwide.

Google has not disclosed which criteria determine early access or when the rollout will reach African markets.

The move reflects broader shifts in how technology companies approach digital identity management, recognising that users’ needs evolve over decades-long relationships with platforms.

For professionals, the Gmail username change eliminates a barrier to maintaining consistent personal branding across digital channels.
