NAIROBI, Kenya — Police in Nairobi have opened an investigation into the sudden death of a Chinese construction worker who was found unresponsive inside a community latrine at the Talanta Stadium premises in Jamhuri.
The incident was reported on Monday morning by officers stationed at the stadium, which remains under construction ahead of its anticipated commissioning.
The facility, a flagship project under the government’s sports infrastructure programme, has drawn scrutiny over working conditions for foreign labourers involved in its completion.
Preliminary information indicates that a chef attached to the Chinese management at the facility discovered the adult male unresponsive inside the latrine.
Security officers guarding the premises, together with other Chinese nationals, responded to the scene and confirmed the situation before rushing the man to Nairobi Hospital.
However, medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival. Police later visited the hospital’s emergency department, where the body was examined and processed.
Authorities noted a slight injury on the right side of the head, though the cause of death remains unclear pending further investigation.
The body was subsequently moved to Lee Funeral Home, where it awaits a postmortem examination to establish the exact circumstances of death.
Nairobi police boss Issa Mohamud confirmed that investigations are ongoing. He stated that detectives are pursuing both murder and sudden death angles, keeping all possibilities open until forensic evidence provides clarity.
The case raises questions about safety protocols at major government construction sites employing foreign workers.
The Talanta Stadium project has faced previous delays and criticism over its management, and this incident adds pressure on authorities to ensure adequate welfare protections for all workers.
The investigation will examine whether the death resulted from foul play, medical emergency, or workplace safety failures. The postmortem results are expected to guide the direction of the probe.
