NYERI, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has welcomed veteran Kikuyu-language broadcaster Evelyn Waithira Muithirania to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) after her defection from the Jubilee Party.
Gachagua received Waithira at his Wamunyoro residence, where she declared her intention to contest the Murang’a County Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election on a DCP ticket.
In a statement following their meeting, Gachagua said he had assured the former radio presenter that the party would conduct free and fair nominations.
He also urged her to begin grassroots mobilisation, particularly through the party’s membership registration drive, ahead of nominations scheduled for March 2027.
Waithira’s entry into DCP adds to the party’s growing recruitment of political aspirants as Gachagua intensifies efforts to strengthen its presence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the next General Election.
Who Is Waithira Muithirania?
Waithira is a veteran broadcaster widely recognised for her contribution to vernacular radio and agricultural advocacy, particularly among small-scale farmers in Central Kenya.
She earned the nickname “Baruthi wa Urimi” (Farming Ambassador) through her efforts to promote farming and champion the interests of agricultural communities through radio programmes.
She built a strong following during her broadcasting career at Inooro FM, where she hosted popular programmes, including the mid-morning show Thiririka and the breakfast programme Hagaria.
She also worked at Coro FM, the Kikuyu-language radio station operated by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), before joining Inooro FM as part of its pioneering broadcasting team.
Through her programmes, Waithira used radio as a platform to educate farmers, discuss agricultural challenges and promote better farming practices.
Her contribution to public service and community development was recognised through a Head of State Commendation (HSC) during the presidency of Mwai Kibaki.
Waithira Eyes Murang’a Woman Representative Seat
Beyond broadcasting, Waithira has ventured into entrepreneurship, farming advocacy and politics.
She previously contested the Murang’a County Woman Representative seat in the 2022 General Election, finishing second with more than 100,000 votes.
Her latest declaration signals a renewed attempt to secure the county’s Woman Representative position, this time through Gachagua’s DCP.
Her entry comes as political parties and aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with DCP stepping up grassroots mobilisation and recruitment in different parts of the country.
