Rough Seas Ahead? Kenya’s Fishers and Boat Operators Put on Alert

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Mariners, fishers and operators of small vessels have been urged to exercise extreme caution as strong winds and potentially very rough seas threaten Kenya’s coastal and offshore waters.

The warning highlights the risks facing people operating at sea, particularly in exposed areas where stronger winds and higher waves could create dangerous conditions.

According to the marine advisory provided, winds blowing from the east-south-east to south-south-west are expected to reach speeds of between 4 and 24 knots, equivalent to approximately 2–12 metres per second, with locally stronger winds possible.

Sea conditions could range from light to rough, with very rough seas expected in some areas experiencing stronger winds and higher waves.

The warning raises safety concerns for fishing trips, small-boat operations and other maritime activities that could become hazardous when wind speeds increase and waves grow higher.

Small boats urged to take precautions

Mariners and fishers have been advised to assess conditions carefully before heading out to sea and to take appropriate safety precautions when operating in exposed waters.

Small boats and other vessels are particularly vulnerable when strong winds and rough waves combine, potentially making navigation difficult and increasing the risk of accidents.

Operators have also been urged to monitor official marine weather updates and respond promptly to changes in conditions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department publishes daily near-shore marine forecasts covering Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi and Lamu counties, alongside seven-day forecasts for regional waters.

Coastal safety remains a concern

The warning comes amid broader concerns about adverse marine weather along Kenya’s coastline.

In September, the Kenya Maritime Authority cautioned coastal communities and maritime operators about potentially dangerous conditions between September and December 2026, including strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility.

The authority urged fishers and boat operators to postpone non-essential trips when conditions deteriorate, ensure vessels are properly secured and require passengers and crew to wear life jackets.

Mariners should consult the latest official forecast before departure, as marine conditions can change and an advisory’s validity depends on its specified forecast period.
