Kenya Shipyards Undocks SKY 1 Barge After Maintenance at Mombasa Facility

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya — Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) has successfully undocked the SKY 1 barge following the completion of maintenance works at its Mombasa Shipyard, underscoring the country’s growing capacity in marine engineering.

The vessel, owned by Alpha Logistics Ltd, underwent scheduled hull repairs and preventive maintenance before being cleared for return to service.

According to KSL, the works were executed in line with established maritime industry standards, ensuring the barge is fully operational and meets safety requirements for continued deployment.

“The project was executed in line with maritime industry standards, ensuring the vessel is fully operational and fit for service,” the company said in a statement.

The successful undocking highlights the role of local engineering expertise in supporting maritime operations along the East African coast.

KSL credited its team of engineers and technicians in Mombasa for delivering the project, noting that their technical capacity is central to maintaining vessel safety and performance.

The development comes as Kenya continues to position itself as a regional hub for shipbuilding, repair, and marine logistics services, leveraging its strategic location along key Indian Ocean shipping routes.

Kenya Shipyards Limited has in recent years expanded its operations to support both commercial and government vessels, contributing to reduced reliance on foreign shipyards for maintenance and repairs.

The undocking of the SKY 1 barge marks another milestone in Kenya’s efforts to develop a robust maritime industry, with KSL positioning itself as a key player in advancing marine engineering solutions across East Africa.

As regional trade volumes grow, demand for reliable vessel maintenance services is expected to increase, placing further emphasis on the role of local shipyards in sustaining maritime operations.
