NAIROBI, Kenya — Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the planned Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will serve as a model for future policing in Kenya, as the government moves to finalize its operational framework ahead of its rollout.
Murkomen said the government is fine-tuning the structure of the specialised unit while ensuring officers receive adequate training and equipment to effectively respond to emerging security threats across the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
“The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will be a model for future policing in Kenya,” Murkomen said.
He added that the unit is being designed to combat evolving forms of crime while strengthening collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public.
“We are therefore fine-tuning the operational framework and ensuring the Unit will be well-equipped and trained to fight emerging crime while working closely with the public to maintain order,” he said.
Speaking after receiving a progress update from the technical team overseeing the establishment of the unit, Murkomen said the meeting reviewed milestones achieved since the last engagement and agreed on the roadmap towards the unit’s operationalisation.
“This morning, I received an update from the technical team working on setting up the Unit. We reviewed the progress made since the last engagement and agreed on the roadmap towards its operationalisation,” he said.
The meeting brought together senior security officials, including Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin, Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Internal Security Principal Secretary Thomas Saka, and Nairobi City County Head of Law Enforcement and Inspectorate Services Eva Wangechi.
The discussions focused on the institutional, operational and logistical preparations required before the specialised police unit becomes fully functional.
The planned Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is expected to strengthen coordinated policing within the capital and its surrounding metropolitan region, where authorities continue to face challenges related to organised crime, traffic management, public order and other emerging security threats
