Designers from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and beyond have submitted their best creations.
From Design Concepts to Reality
The competition saw an overwhelming turnout, leading to an extension of the design submission deadline to June 14th.
“We intend to capture the best of Africa’s leather design talent through submissions to the Real Leather. Stay Different. Africa Talent Leather Design Showcase 2024,” said Beatrice Mwasi, Managing Director of the Centre for Business Innovation & Training.
The showcase aims to present the finest leather designer who can outcompete other regional winners at the global showcase later in the year.
Participants had to ensure their designs comprised at least 50pc cowhide leather, with a preference for natural or organic materials.
The use of fur, exotic skins, and plastics (except when no natural alternatives exist) was strictly prohibited.
The showcase celebrates leather’s beauty, versatility, strength, and durability, aligning with its commitment to sustainability and environmental potential.
Judges and Selection Process
The next phase involves a meticulous review by a distinguished panel of judges.
The top five entries in the categories of apparel, accessories, and footwear will advance to the physical product development stage.
Selected designers will bring their concepts to life, culminating in a prestigious exhibition where these designs will be showcased to industry leaders, potential buyers, and the public.
Leading the judging panel is Preston Viswamo, ALLPI’s Regional Design Studio Project Manager, who brings over 25 years of experience in the leather industry.
Joining him is Michael Redwood, a seasoned veteran with nearly 60 years in the leather industry, known for his expertise in the circular economy and ESG agenda.
Renowned Ethical Fashion expert Jacqueline Shaw, Tezera Ketema, co-founder of Podohub.com, and Judy Maina, founder of Siafu Leather (now DAKARI), round out the panel, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the submitted designs.
The competition includes a “People’s Choice” Award, allowing the public to vote for their favorite designs.
This journey will culminate in a grand final judging event in Ethiopia, where the top 15 contestants in apparel, accessories, and footwear will exhibit their designs.
Three winners will be picked from these categories, alongside a “People’s Choice” winner.
