MACHAKOS, Kenya — Contractors and vendors who supplied goods and services to the Machakos County Government have threatened protests over millions of shillings in unpaid dues, alleging intimidation and irregular demands whenever they seek settlement of their claims.
The suppliers said they delivered goods during the 2023/2024 financial year but have since faced delays despite following procurement and payment procedures.
They warned that the continued non-payment has pushed many into financial distress, with some defaulting on loans taken to execute county contracts.
“We supplied in the year 2023/2024 and since then tumekua tukizungushwa sana. We have tried to follow all protocols followed by any supplier, but after supplying, things changed,” said vendor Maureen Mwende during a press briefing in Machakos.
Another contractor, Sammy Mutua, said he was forced to borrow money to service debts after the county allegedly failed to honour its obligations.
“Nilikua nimechukua loan, and now I was forced to borrow money from my friends to clear the loans, so it has been tough,” he said.
The contractors issued an ultimatum demanding payment by Sunday.
They warned that if the county fails to act, they will camp outside the governor’s office starting Tuesday and remain there until their grievances are addressed.
Some suppliers also alleged intimidation and irregular demands tied to payment processing. Sammy Kioko, another contractor, claimed vendors face pressure when pursuing their claims.
“In Machakos, you cannot speak, intimidation is the language of the day and you cannot even express your grievances. You can also never be paid without a kickback. People are suffering and we have no one to help us,” he said.
Contractors in Machakos said they have attempted to engage county officials through formal channels without success.
They claim some suppliers have visited county offices multiple times seeking updates, but have received no clear timelines for payment.
