MANDERA, Kenya — Security forces in Mandera County repelled a heavily armed attack in Arabia town on Sunday evening after suspected militants engaged police and local security personnel in a fierce gunfight.
Senior intelligence officials in Mandera said security officers responded to the attack and managed to hold their positions, forcing the attackers to retreat from the border town.
The identity of the gunmen had not been officially established by the time of reporting, although security officers suspected they could be members of Al-Shabaab, the Somalia-based militant group that has previously carried out attacks and incursions along the Kenya-Somalia border.
Heavy gunfight reported in Arabia
According to security officials, the attackers launched the assault on Arabia town in the evening, prompting security personnel stationed in the area to engage them in a prolonged exchange of gunfire.
Police and other local security personnel maintained their positions during the confrontation and eventually repelled the attackers.
Officials said the area was secured after the militants withdrew, with security agencies subsequently increasing patrols around the town and surrounding areas.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the number of assailants and the direction in which they fled, remained under investigation.
No casualties reported
Mandera’s senior police command said no casualties had been recorded among security personnel or civilians following the confrontation.
Authorities were conducting a wider assessment to establish whether there were injuries, property damage or other consequences resulting from the attack.
The absence of reported casualties could not immediately be independently verified as security agencies continued assessing the situation.
Residents in the border region have previously faced security threats linked to armed groups operating across the Kenya-Somalia frontier.
Al-Shabaab suspicion
Although officials had not formally identified the attackers, security personnel suspected an Al-Shabaab connection.
The group has historically targeted security personnel, civilians and public infrastructure in parts of northeastern Kenya, particularly in areas close to the Somalia border.
However, suspicion alone does not establish responsibility for Sunday’s attack, and no formal claim of responsibility had been reported at the time of writing.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the attackers’ identity, their route of entry and withdrawal, and whether the incident was connected to previous militant activity in the region.
Security operation intensified
Following the attack, security agencies intensified patrols in and around Arabia town in an effort to locate the fleeing attackers.
Officials were also assessing the wider security situation along the border and monitoring possible routes that could have been used by the gunmen to retreat.
The response comes amid longstanding security challenges in Mandera, where the proximity to Somalia has made parts of the county vulnerable to cross-border militant activity.
Security agencies have frequently relied on increased patrols, intelligence gathering and cooperation with local communities to prevent attacks and track suspected militants.
