Nyandarua Senator John Methu has reacted to West Ham United’s heated Premier League clash against Arsenal at the London Stadium, saying the referee “did them bad” after a late equaliser was ruled out following a VAR review.
In a post accompanied by a video showing him celebrating what he believed was a dramatic West Ham goal, Methu said: “I was at the London Stadium supporting West Ham and that ref has done us bad!”
The celebrations were short-lived after West Ham’s 95th-minute equaliser by Callum Wilson was disallowed following a lengthy VAR intervention.
According to match officials and Premier League explanations, the decision was overturned after VAR ruled that West Ham forward Pablo had committed a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya during the build-up to the goal.
The incident sparked immediate debate, with the on-field referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarding the goal before being advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After several minutes of review, the goal was ruled out, confirming Arsenal’s 1-0 victory in a tightly contested match that has major implications in the Premier League title race.
The Premier League later released an official explanation stating that the decision was based on a foul on the goalkeeper during the chaotic corner that led to the goal.
The ruling has divided opinion among fans and pundits, with some arguing the contact was minimal while others, including former referees, backing the VAR intervention as correct.
For Arsenal, the decision preserved a crucial three points that strengthened their position at the top of the table, while West Ham were left frustrated after believing they had earned a dramatic late draw.
The moment has since gone viral on social media, especially after Senator Methu’s reaction video captured him celebrating before the goal was disallowed.
